If you like to move to uplifting music then Vinyasa yoga is for you! The Sanskrit root vi means ‘sequence’ and nyasa means ‘to place in a special way’. Vinyasa yoga thus stands for the connected flow of the yoga poses and your breath.
Vinyasa practice can be more physically challenging and dynamic than other more static styles of yoga, such as Hatha or Yin. The constant pace of the Sun Salutations means you build up a sweat and get a detoxifying, cardiovascular workout. Students are still taught to be technically proficient in the poses, without sacrificing pace and flow.
What you’re thinking, your intention, while you are practicing is just as important and will influence the result of your practice. The aim is to achieve a peaceful mind and breath while being physically challenged. Meditation in action, as we call it!
When you are a Vinyasa beginner your mind, breath, and body might be all over the place. Not to worry! Yoga is a spiritual practice that develops step by step. With steady practice and patience, you’ll transform from worrier into a gracious warrior. Challenge yourself to dance to the rhythm of your breath, fluidly moving from one pose to the next.
